ChatGPT search discovers web pages through Bing’s index. Before ChatGPT can cite your page, Bing has to have found it. This makes Bing indexation the gate upstream of every other thing you do for ChatGPT visibility: no Bing entry, no candidate, no citation. Most teams submit their site to Google Search Console and never open Bing Webmaster Tools at all.
The connection is contractual, not incidental. When OpenAI shipped browsing, it ran on Bing, and OpenAI engineers have confirmed the search backend is Bing’s (SERoundtable coverage, Yoast’s breakdown). Seer Interactive analyzed thousands of ChatGPT search citations and found roughly 87% matched Bing’s top results. So the practical model is simple: whatever wins in Bing is the raw material ChatGPT reaches for.
Does ChatGPT really use Bing and only Bing?
Mostly, with an honest asterisk. The default architecture is Bing-based, and that is where you should spend your effort. But two independent studies in mid-2025 found evidence that some ChatGPT surfaces pulled from Google results too, which means the plumbing is more mixed than the official partnership language admits. Do not read this as “so Bing does not matter.” Read it as “Bing is the floor, and the floor is where most people have done zero work.” The upside is concentrated precisely because the competition ignored it.
How do you check your Bing indexation?
Run a site:yourdomain.com search on Bing and see how many pages come back. Then open Bing Webmaster Tools, which most teams have never registered. It shows you what Bing has actually indexed, crawl errors, and (this is the part worth the signup) an AI-visibility view. Across GEO practitioners, the consensus is that this tab is currently the best available ground truth for AI citations, because it reports the real queries where you showed up, not a third-party tool’s guess.
That last point matters more than it sounds. Most “AI visibility” dashboards estimate. Bing’s own data reports. When a source that owns the index tells you which queries cited you, that beats any sampling method a tracker can run from the outside.
What is IndexNow and should you use it?
IndexNow is a free protocol, launched by Microsoft Bing and Yandex, that lets you ping search engines the moment your content changes instead of waiting for a crawl. You generate an API key, host a verification file at your domain root, and POST the changed URLs to the endpoint. The Bing Webmaster Tools IndexNow guide and the IndexNow documentation both walk through the setup, and you can submit up to 10,000 URLs at once. New content that used to take days to appear can show up in hours.
For AI search, faster Bing indexation is faster ChatGPT eligibility. Publish a page, ping IndexNow, and you have collapsed the lag between “this exists” and “ChatGPT can find it.” Copilot, which also runs on Bing, benefits from the same signal. One protocol, two AI surfaces, zero cost.
Why young brands stay invisible even after publishing
Here is a result from our own testing that reframes the whole problem. We asked Gemini 2.5 Flash, with web search switched off, about a site that was four months old. The answer was a flat “UNKNOWN.” The model had no memory of the brand, because the brand postdated its training data. With retrieval disabled, there was no other surface for it to reach.
That is the quiet truth under all AI visibility work. For anything newer than the last training run, the model knows nothing about you except what it can retrieve at answer time. Retrieval is not a bonus channel. For a young brand it is the only channel. And retrieval for ChatGPT starts at Bing’s index. If Bing has not crawled you, the model has no memory and no retrieval, which is a polite way of saying you do not exist to it yet.
This is why Bing indexation sits upstream of the more glamorous work. You can write the perfect answer block and still be absent from every ChatGPT response, not because your content lost on quality but because it never entered the pool. The ranking never happened. The same content-fit signals that decide how ChatGPT chooses which sources to cite only apply to pages Bing already knows about.
Register your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, run a site: check to see what is actually indexed, and turn on IndexNow so new pages get discovered in hours instead of days. Our free scan checks whether the AI-relevant bots can reach your pages at all, which is the step before indexation and the one most sites quietly fail.
